CGPA to GPA Conversion for Studying Abroad
How US, UK, Canadian, and Australian universities convert your Indian CGPA — and the minimum CGPA they actually expect for admission.
To convert Indian CGPA to a US-style 4.0 GPA, use: GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. For example, an 8.0 CGPA equals 3.2 GPA. However, most US universities use credential evaluation services (WES, ECE, IERF) which use their own conversion based on your full transcript.
Most US graduate programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA (= 7.5 CGPA). Top programs expect 3.5+ GPA (= 8.75+ CGPA). UK and Australian universities typically use a class system (First Class = 60%+ in UK, distinction = 80%+ in Australia).
Why CGPA Conversion Matters
Indian universities use a 10-point CGPA scale; American universities use a 4-point GPA scale; UK universities use a Class system (First, Upper Second, Lower Second, Third); Australian universities use a Distinction system. These aren't interchangeable.
When you apply abroad, the admissions committee needs to compare your academic record fairly against domestic applicants. They can't simply use your 10-point CGPA — they need to convert it (or have a credential evaluator do it for them) into terms they understand.
WES, ECE & Credential Evaluation
The most common credential evaluation services for US/Canadian applications are:
- WES (World Education Services) — Most widely accepted; costs around $200; requires sealed transcripts
- ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators) — Similar to WES; required by some specific universities
- IERF (International Education Research Foundation) — California-focused
- SpanTran — Newer and increasingly accepted
These services request your sealed transcripts directly from your university, apply their own conversion methodology, and produce a verified evaluation report that universities accept. They're more rigorous than self-conversion — they look at your specific courses, credit hours, and grading scale, not just your final CGPA.
For many top US universities, WES or ECE evaluation is mandatory, not optional. Check each university's admissions page before applying. Self-converted CGPA values in your application will be cross-checked against the official evaluation.
United States: 4.0 Scale
| Indian CGPA | US GPA (4.0) | US Letter Grade | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.5+ | 3.8+ | A | Exceptional |
| 9.0 - 9.4 | 3.6 - 3.79 | A-/B+ | Very strong |
| 8.0 - 8.9 | 3.2 - 3.59 | B+/B | Above average |
| 7.0 - 7.9 | 2.8 - 3.19 | B/B- | Average |
| 6.0 - 6.9 | 2.4 - 2.79 | C+/C | Below average |
WES actually uses a slightly more nuanced conversion based on individual course grades, not just CGPA. This typically gives Indian students a slight boost (often 0.1-0.3 GPA points higher than the simple formula) because high-end Indian grades are harder to earn than equivalent US grades.
United Kingdom: Class System
UK universities don't use a numeric scale — they use degree classifications:
| UK Classification | Indian Percentage | Indian CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| First Class Honours (1st) | 70%+ | 7.4+ CGPA |
| Upper Second Class (2:1) | 60-69% | 6.3 - 7.3 CGPA |
| Lower Second Class (2:2) | 50-59% | 5.3 - 6.2 CGPA |
| Third Class | 40-49% | 4.2 - 5.2 CGPA |
Most UK Masters programs require 2:1 minimum (60%+ equivalent), which maps to roughly 6.5 CGPA. Top UK universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE) often require First Class — 70%+ equivalent, or 7.4+ CGPA.
Canada: Mixed Scales
Canadian universities are inconsistent — some use the US 4.0 scale, others use 9-point or percentage scales. Common ones:
- University of Toronto, McGill, UBC: 4.0 GPA scale (use US conversion)
- University of Waterloo, Western: Percentage-based (often 90+/80+/70+ for various classes)
- York University, Queen's: 9-point letter grade scale
For most Canadian PG programs, the minimum is equivalent to a US 3.0 GPA or 70%, which is roughly 7.5 CGPA in the Indian system. Top programs (Toronto, McGill, Waterloo) expect 3.5+ GPA equivalent (~8.75 CGPA).

Australia uses descriptive grades rather than numbers:
| Australian Grade | Percentage | Indian CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| High Distinction (HD) | 85%+ | 9.0+ CGPA |
| Distinction (D) | 75-84% | 8.0 - 8.9 CGPA |
| Credit (C) | 65-74% | 6.85 - 7.9 CGPA |
| Pass (P) | 50-64% | 5.3 - 6.84 CGPA |
Top Australian universities (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU) typically require Distinction-level (75%+ / 8.0+ CGPA) for Masters. The "Group of Eight" Australian universities are the rough equivalent of the US Ivy League.
Minimum CGPA by Country for Masters Admission
| Country | Minimum CGPA | Competitive CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 7.5 (= 3.0 GPA) | 8.75+ (= 3.5+ GPA) |
| United Kingdom | 6.5 (2:1 equivalent) | 7.5+ (First Class) |
| Canada | 7.0 | 8.5+ |
| Australia | 6.5 | 8.0+ (Distinction) |
| Germany | 7.0 (~2.5 German scale) | 8.0+ (~1.5 German scale) |
| Singapore | 7.5 | 8.5+ |
Remember: CGPA is just one factor. Strong GRE/IELTS/TOEFL scores, research experience, work history, and statement of purpose can compensate for a moderate CGPA — especially at universities that practice holistic admissions.
